Travelling as an Architect is Fun
Let’s started, again and again I have to told you because it is a real deal, traveling is a place that you can be you 100%. Traveling and your daily life always have a connection that makes you YOU! Then my perception about what I have been through as a person who love traveling and also study then work as an architect bring me conclusion that being an architect has an advantages for doing a solo traveling.
It’s not about your advantages to visit an architectural tourist spot or a popular and legend famous architect buildings. I will tell you the things that you might be forgot but actually is in your blood as an architect, and it’s makes your journey as a solo traveler comes easier.
Map is Your Best Friends
Do you realize in traveling map is our heartbeat! You always stick with it wherever you go. When you solo traveling, sometimes you find map is the only friend to get somewhere you perfectly don’t know about. Lost is always a part of reading a map, for example sometimes there is a street with a different name, the street that not exist, or even for some people is so hard to pointing where they are in the moment at the map.
But, don’t talk map is hard for an architect! We born and raised with drawing skill and this methods, it will be a lot easier for us to plot the map in an actual site. We used to “scale”, we can estimate how far the actual street will be or as easy as we will know the best spot to see or take a picture of a huge building for a good composition. I know this sentences might be hard to get, but if you are an architect I believe you know what I mean.
Easy to Get Excited by The City
The other thing that I feel different from the other people while I’m doing solo traveling is I can easily get excited of the city itself. I don’t need to try hard to think what the next place I want to see or where I’m going to do after this touristy place, because sometimes I’m just amazed by a small thing in the city.
Here it’s the examples of my journey so far. In Barcelona might be you all not realize that they have a special pattern in their pedestrian ways and it’s different from one area to another, and that day I just keep walking searching for that kind of patterns. In Budapest they have four subway stations that have a really unique design and all of them is integrated in one line, amazing right? Let see Amsterdam, I’m trying hard to analyze how they put each ways of any kind of transportation (tram, bike, walk, bus, car) on the same road, and at the intersection is the best way to take a moment to look around and smile, they work very well. Bravo urban planner!
You Feel Bored and Tired? SKETCH!
Yeah! We born and learn about sketching. It’s an easy way as an architect who is solo traveling and sometimes too tired or bored to keep moving every time. Just sit on the park or at the front of the nice building or a temple, spend an hour or even a day to sketch!!
People trying hard to kill a time while they waiting on a plane or a train with their own activities such as reading a book, listen the music, or eat. Do you realize all of that are a consumptive, but when you draw something that is productive way as a person! It’s doesn’t matter you have a low skill of drawing but I bet we are better than the others right?
So don’t put your sketch book at home when you traveling, bring it with you so you wouldn’t have a boring days or moments.
Messed Up Sleeping Pattern is Your Routine
Architect in general is known as a hardcore job. As far as I know we are a hard workers. Tight schedule always bring us the routine that is not like anyone else. We usually overtime and not really good at regular sleeping time. Our week is just like roller coaster, sometimes we relax but sometimes we have a night like a hell. But I believe we love it!
When you are traveling it’s not so different, we don’t have a tight schedule. Party two nights in the row is not a big deal, we have an owl eyes. Wake up early in the morning for flight after sleep for only three hours? bring it on, we used to it just like when we heading of presentation in daily life.
So nobody can adapt about time cycle for a day or a week like us (might be a doctor also). Take that advantages to have the best experiences while traveling, never give up!
So young architects! My advice is only go out for adventure, so many cities waiting for you to explore. Find your happiness even for a moment because we have eyes, hand, and skill that better than everyone else to do solo traveling. See you on the road!
